A third round loss from Vera Zvonareva sees her drop one spot to 4th, but the big mover is another Russian, Maria Sharapova, who moved up four places to 7th after making the semifinals. Dispalced due to Sharapova's rise were Flavia Penneta, who fell two spots to 9th, the retired Elena Dementieva, sitting 10th, and Francesca Schiavone, who dropped out of the top 10.

Wozniacki had a very nice win in California, but was fortunate to avoid much serious challenge, with easy wins over top two players she faced, Sharapova and Azarenka. Kleybanova and Bartoli were tougher opposition, but the Dane got through to claim the title.

Safina won three straight matches for the first time in more than a year, and pulled herself back into the top 50. She had some nice wins in there, too, beating Daniela Hantuchova (28) and Samantha Stosur (6), before falling to Maria Sharapova in the round of 16. A great bounceback after being dropper of the week last week.

The New Zealander won an ITF event in Irapuato this week, gaining more than 50 places after beating Julia Cohen (297), Ivana Lisjak (149) and Andreja Klepac (295) en route to the title.

Jankovic won Indian Wells last season, beating Shahar Peer (12), Stosur and Caroline Wozniacki to win the title. This year, though, she only managed to make the fourth round, losing to her countrywoman Ana Ivanovic (20).

Last year, Molik had a wild card for IW, and proceeded to roll of three wins, beating Anabel Medina Garrigues (102) and Elena Baltacha (71) to make the fourth round. Since then, though, she has not won back-to-back main draw matches, and she has not played since winning a match in Melbourne this year.
