The top 10 changes significantly, with a big move up for Madrid winner Petra Kvitova, up four places to 6th. Venus Williams' removal from the rankings sees Victoria Azarenka come up to 4th, and Miaria Sharapova up to 5th. Also coming up is the retired Elena Dementieva, who moves back into the top 10, ending up 8th. Sam Stosur also rises a place to rejoin the top 10. The lone player dropping out of the top 10 is Shuai Peng, who falls two spots to 11th.

It's impossible to ignore the Czech for this title, as her performance in Madrid was truly impressive. Three top ten wins lift her well ahead of the large group battling for position between 7th-15th.

Martinez Sanchez was the surprise winner in Rome last year, and without that victory on her record, she takes a strong drop. She beat Caroline Wozniacki (2) to win the title last year, in week that also saw her take out Ana Ivanovic (19), Jelena Jankovic (20) and Francesca Schiavone (12). This year in Madrid, she lost first round, having drawn Na Li (7)
