May 9th Rankings

Novak Djokovic's win in Madrid still has him at #2, but the margin between the Serb and Nadal is now razor thin. If Djokovic continues his good form in Rome this week, he should stand a great chance of seizing top spot. Tomas Berdych comes back into the top ten, rising two spots to 9th, changing places with Jurgen Melzer who drops to 11th.

Winners:

Madrid
#2 Novak Djokovic SRB (2)

Semis Thomaz Bellucci BRA (43) | 4-6 6-4 6-1
Final #1 Rafael Nadal ESP (1) | 7-5 6-4
Average Opponent Rank 25.4

Djokovic's supremacy extended to the clay, as he beat Nadal in Spain, a shocking result that truly shows how far he has advanced to the top of the world game. He was put under pressure in a couple of matches, in the quarters and semis, but came through well, before doing a great job to resist a fightback from Nadal in the first set.

Riser of the Week (top 100):
Wayne Odesnik USA (74), Up 31
The American, who faced an ATP ban after being caught transporting HGH in December 2009, has done well for himself by rebuidling his ranking in the last few months. Odesnik had to qualify at a challenger in Savannah this week, and promptly went on an 8-0 run, including beating two players the USTA would surely rather see succeed, Ryan Harrison (97) and Donald Young (86), among others.

Riser of the Week (other):
Lukas Rosol CZE (110), Up 25
Rosol, who fell a fair margin last week, got most of it back with a home challenger win, as he took the title in Prague. He did benifit from two retirements, including from the returning Fernando Gonzalez (n/a), but also beat Julien Benneteau (45) on his way to the title.

Dropper of the Week (top 100):
Philipp Petzschner GER (56), Down 9
Petzschner had a bit of a quirk in his rankings, due to the scheduling change this year; he had last year and this year's Munich both on last week. This week, last year's came off, this was a week that saw him make the semis, including a big win over Tomas Berdych (9). The drop sent Petzschner out of the top 50.

Dropper of the Week (other):
Filip Krajinovic SRB (293), Down 88
The 19-year-old Serbian has not played a match since October, but still had a solid ranking thaks to a solid 2010. A lot of his ranking hinged on a semifinal in Belgrade, which saw him beat Horacio Zeballos (133), and beifit from the retirement of Novak Djokovic along the way.
