May 23rd Rankings - Women

Shifts in the bottom half of the top 10 see the retired Elena Dementieva rise two spots, surpassing Petra Kvitova and Na Li, while Franesca Schiavone displaces Flavia Pennetta at the bottom of the top 10, a week before she has major points to defend.

It seems absurd how often Caroline Wozniacki plays, as the #1 seed for Roland Garros took to the court in Brussels, winning the tournament with some solid victories over top 15 players. It's all well and good for her to win these types of titles, but you have to wonder about her playing a tough final on the weekend before a major.

Andrea Petkovic won her second career title in Strasbourg, and while she didn't face any top opponents, she got some solid wins over three top 35 players, that could serve her in good stead as she heads to Paris.

Riser of the Week (top 100):
Ayumi Morita JPN (66), Up 5
No real big risers this week, so the award goes to Morita, who won a couple of matches in Brussels, beating Zheng Jie (89) to make the quarterfinals, before losing to Francesca Schiavone (10). She also dropped a first round loss from Strasbourg last year, but it wasn't a bad won, to Anastasia Rodionova (57).

Riser of the Week (other):
Alison Van Uytvanck BEL (191), Up 51
Is this another superstar from Belgium? The 17-year-old Van Uytvanck showed some major potential at a home event in Brussels, winning three matches to qualify for the main draw, then beating Patty Schnyder (49), before losing to her countrywoman, Yanina Wickmayer (20). It looks like she will be one to watch in the years to come.

Dropper of the Week (top 100):
Jie Zheng CHN (89), Down 22
Zheng had a huge result this time last year, making the final on the clay at Warsaw, which included a win over Caroline Wozniacki (2). This time, she played in Brussels, and lost first round to Ayumi Morita, sending her falling heavily, making it a total drop of 30 places in two weeks.

Dropper of the Week (other):
Aleksandra Krunic SRB (227), Down 35
Krunic, an 18-year-old Serbian, won an ITF event in Moscow this week last year, with no particularily impressive wins, but still a strong result. She tried to defend this week, but lost in the quarterfinals, when she had to retire against Yulia Putintseva (n/a)
